Position Summary:

The editor edits all books and Gateway articles, along with exhibit labels and other Missouri Historical Society publications. The editor may also write for Gateway, the MHS blog, and other outlets.

Essential Functions:

  • Creating and adhering to Press schedule
  • Editing 2-3 book manuscripts per year: includes copyediting, formatting, working with authors on revisions, obtaining foreword and prefaces, indexing, and preparing for layout and production
  • Managing author relationships following initial contracting phase until production, then collaborating to publicize new releases via MHS blog
  • Editing biannual Gateway articles: includes copyediting, formatting, working with authors on revisions, determining content for departments, and helping with production management
  • Acquiring photos and permissions for book projects and Gateway
  • With Director, receiving and responding to author proposals and manuscript submissions; acquiring new book projects and Gateway articles
  • Researching and writing columns for Gateway and MHS blog
  • Participating on exhibition teams; copyediting and proofreading exhibition labels plus other pieces, such as media transcripts and interactive text
  • Copyediting text for all divisions of MHS: includes eBlasts, events calendars, member magazines, brochures, rack cards, flyers, and web content
  • Working at book signings and MHS member events
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in English, Journalism, or History
  • Minimum 2 years of editorial experience, preferably in a nonprofit museum and/or publishing house

 Skills:

  • Must have knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and outstanding editing skills (an editing test will be given to top candidates)
  • Must work well with authors, in-house staff, freelancers, interns
  • Excellent writing skills are essential
  • Must be Macintosh literate
  • Should be interested in history, Missouri, and overall activities of the Society and be willing to participate in committee work
