Position Summary:

The Exhibitions Preparator and Carpenter is a full-time position with responsibilities for building risers, lifts, reading rails, temporary walls and other exhibit elements. This preparator will also assist with installing, de-installing, and maintaining both in-house and traveling exhibitions. This preparator works closely with designers, with other staff and contract preparators, and with members of our media team to ensure that exhibit elements are built to museum standards and that exhibits are built and installed in a way that protects and preserves the historical collections. 

Essential Functions:

  • Building and finishing exhibit elements such as lifts, risers, platforms, and pedestals.
  • Installing and removing exhibit features including cases, walls, and graphics.
  • Packing, moving, and installing exhibit elements.
  • Performing walkthroughs of exhibits on the floor and completing necessary upkeep.
  • Managing the workshop tools, inventory, and special projects.
  • Maintaining the proper storage and care of exhibit installation equipment.
  • Performing other duties as needed.


  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five or more years experience in carpentry, cabinet, or woodworking shop, preferably in a museum environment.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds on a regular basis.


  • Skill in working with a variety of materials including: wood, metal, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives.
  • Ability to read and follow design drawings and construction plans with an ability to take accurate measurements and an eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools commonly used in a woodshop or worksite environment.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Preference given to candidates with mount making and/or framing experience.
