Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society's Moving Image and Sound Department seeks one qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Media Archivist. The candidate should have a Degree or Certificate in Film Preservation or qualified experience. An MLIS is helpful with proper experience working in an Archive, Media Archive or Library including: creating catalogue records, handling various types of media and managing digital files. The duties will include observation, measurement and documentation of damaged or deteriorating film, videotape or audio recordings; cleaning, remediation and repair of damage to audio-visual materials, including leading and splicing of motion-picture film. This position also requires experience with digitization of media and knowledge of digital file formats.

This position is temporary full-time (1-year appointment) with possibility of extension.

Essential Functions:

  • Creating new catalogue records and creating artifact condition reports for Moving Images & Sound Collections in the Museum's Collections Management System, Mimsy
  • Completing primary and secondary inspection – including: observation, measurements and documentation of damaged or deteriorating film, videotape or audio recordings; cleaning, remediation and repair of damage to audio-visual materials, including leading and labeling of motion-picture film
  • Packing, shipping and receiving of Motion Picture Film
  • Digitization of motion-picture film and various analog video/audio formats
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • MA or Certification from a recognized film preservation program
  • MLIS is helpful but not required
  • Experience performing film inspections, preservation, and restoration in a film archive, audiovisual library, or recognized film processing/restoration laboratory or media center
  • Ability to operate all types of equipment associated with reviewing, inspecting, and preserving Audio-visual materials
  • Knowledge of current best practices in film preservation processes
  • Some knowledge of the film editing process and audio-visual production

Skills:

  • Ability to plan, organize, and carry through on preservation projects
  • Ability to complete "secondary inspection"; further observation, measurements and documentation of damaged or deteriorating film AND remediation and repair of damage, cleaning, leading and labeling film
  • Experience in identifying various analog and digital media formats
  • Ability to identify and remediate issues associated with analog videocassettes
  • Experience in creating new catalogue records and creating artifact condition reports for the audio-visual collections in the museum's Collections Management System, Mimsy
  • Experience with digitization of both analog video and motion picture film
  • Knowledge of various digital codecs and application
  • Accurate recording of data, excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-driven and be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to handle large, heavy and fragile materials; reach shelves up high and down low; utilize stairs (mobile and stationary), and operate a pallet lifter.

This position will require fit-testing for mask use when needed.
