Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society is seeking a Curatorial Assistant - LGBTQ Collection to support and assist in the development of activities for the LGBTQ Collecting Initiative and related exhibitions in 2020 and 2025. Of the responsibilities, this position will assist in conducting oral histories and cataloging artifacts among other duties.

This is a temporary full-time position currently scheduled for three years with the possibility of extension.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and maintain a database of potential donors, interview subjects, and connections with the St. Louis LGBTQ community
  • Create a comprehensive guide to LGBTQ history collections held by MHS for the purpose of creating greater access to those resources
  • Schedule and conduct oral histories relevant to the research and for the exhibitions
  • Assist the Curator in researching the St. Louis LGBTQ community, both primary and secondary resources
  • Assist in artifact collection across departments and cataloging the objects in a timely manner
  • Assist in the development of non-exhibit related materials and information requests such as presentations, blog posts, artifact images, etc.
  • Participate in related programming and interviews related to the collecting initiative and/or exhibitions

Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. in History, Museum Studies, Gender Studies, or related field; Masters Degree preferred
  • Experience with artifact research and familiarity with working with artifacts

Skills:

  • Proficient understanding of historical research methodologies and resources as well as a basic understanding of the fundamentals of historical collections processing
  • Familiar with the history of LGBTQ communities in the St. Louis region is highly desired
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work well independently or as part of a team
  • Excellent research, writing, grammar, and attention to details 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Must be able to interact professionally with the public and patrons
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
