Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks an Assistant Collections Manager to assist the Collections Manager with duties related to the care and storage of the museum's objects collection. Will also work closely with the object catalogers in the processing of three-dimensional objects.

Essential Functions:

Primary duties will be:

  • Proper housing of and storage of museum objects
  • Assisting with reorganization of collections storage
  • Contributing to the maintenance and update of object records in the collections management database
  • Facilitating the association of objects' digital images with the accompanying object record
  • Coordinating with object catalogers in completing the processing of incoming donations
  • Performing Integrated Pest Management procedures
  • Maintaining the appearance of collections storage and collections processing areas

Secondary responsibilities will include:

  • Occasionally cataloging artifacts
  • Occasionally assisting with the pick-up and delivery of new donations
  • Occasionally assisting with museum special events
  • Occasionally assisting with exhibition installations and deinstallations
  • Performing other duties as assigned
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Museum Studies, Public History, History, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of collections management experience, preferably in a nonprofit museum and/or public sector

Skills and Experience:

  • Three or more years of experience working with historical collections in a museum environment
  • Knowledge of and understanding of collections management principles and museum best practices
  • Familiarity with a variety of museum quality materials such as blue board, Ethafoam, Volara, etc.
  • Experience creating boxes, housings, and enclosures for permanent storage of museum objects
  • Object cataloging and data entry
  • Safe handling and transport of museum objects of various types
  • Strong organizational, planning, project and time management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to be flexible and handle multiple projects as assigned
  • Strong interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team setting
  • Familiarity with and ability to use a variety of basic standard hand and power tools such as wrenches, drills, circular saws, heat guns, etc.
  • Ability to safely lift 50+ lbs.
  • Familiarity with a variety of types of museum objects
  • Familiarity with MIMSY collections management database preferred, but not necessary
