Assistant Exhibitions Preparator

Position Summary:

The Assistant Exhibitions Preparator is a part-time temporary position with responsibilities for installing, de-installing, and maintaining both in-house and traveling exhibitions. The assistant preparator works most closely with our exhibitions preparator and exhibitions carpenter but will also work with Exhibitions and Research designers and cross-departmentally with the exhibitions registrar and conservator to ensure that exhibits are built and installed in a way that protects and preserves the historical collections. 

The assistant preparator will work 21 hours a week with the possibility of 28 hours a week during installs and deinstalls. The position is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal.

Essential Functions:

• Perform walkthroughs of exhibits on the floor and completing necessary upkeep
• Build and finish exhibit elements such as lifts, risers, platforms, and pedestals
• Install and remove exhibit features including cases, walls, and graphics
• Packing, moving, and installing exhibit elements and artifacts
• Manage the workshop tools, inventory, and special projects
• Maintain the proper storage and care of exhibit installation equipment
• Perform other duties as needed

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in History, Visual Art, or a related field
• Three or more years experience working in a museum environment, or comparable experience
• Ability to properly handle and move delicate and valuable artwork and artifacts
• Ability to lift 50+ pounds on a regular basis
• Mount making and/or framing experience preferred

Skills:

• Skill in working with a variety of materials including: wood, metal, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives
• Knowledge of hand and power tools commonly used in a woodshop or worksite environment
• Excellent verbal and communication skills
