Associate Editor

Position Summary:

The Associate Editor edits text for all divisions of the Missouri Historical Society, along with exhibit labels and other MHS Press publications. The Associate Editor manages MHS's bimonthly article in the St. Louis American and may also solicit and write for Gateway, the MHS blog, and other outlets. Proofreads all books and Gateway articles.

Essential Functions:

• Copyediting and/or proofreading biannual Gateway articles
• Acquiring photos and permissions for book projects and Gateway, managing author relationships
• Proofreading book manuscripts
• Occasionally acquiring new book projects and Gateway articles
• Occasionally researching and writing columns for Gateway and MHS blog
• Participating on exhibition teams; copyediting and proofreading exhibition labels plus other pieces, such as media transcripts and interactive text
• Copyediting text for all divisions of MHS: includes eBlasts, Currents member magazine and events calendar, brochures, rack cards, flyers, and web content
• Handling book publicity and working at author events
• Managing MHS's bimonthly article in the St. Louis American, planning the schedule and either writing or working with staff writers
• Managing book awards program
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in English, Journalism, or History
• Minimum 2 years of editorial experience, preferably in a nonprofit museum and/or publishing house
• Must have knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and outstanding editing skills 
• Must be Macintosh literate

Skills:

• Must work well with authors, in-house staff, freelancers, interns
• Must be able to write for a general readership
• Should be interested in history, Missouri, and overall activities of the Society and be willing to participate in committee work

*Finalists will be required to complete an editing test.
