Position Summary:

This will initially be a 2-year, full-time position responsible for fundraising initiatives to secure principal, planned, and major gifts for a capital campaign. Develop, manage, and implement strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors through individualized plans leading to transformational gifts. Manage a portfolio of 150 individual donors. Build relationships with benefactors and prospective donors on behalf of the Missouri Historical Society (MHS). Coordinate activities with MD of Philanthropy, Campaign Manager, philanthropy colleagues, and steering committee members in support of a capital campaign.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage a portfolio of principal, planned, and major gift prospects and donors in the St. Louis region; meet goals for meaningful contacts, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and closed gift goals. Donor development will be largely in person, supplemented by a variety of virtual technologies.
  • Develop thoughtful, creative, and prudent strategies for meeting capital campaign fundraising goals, and develop and implement sound strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward new and existing principal, planned, and major gift prospects.
  • Coordinate and conduct prospect research activities in order to develop strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding principal, planned, and major individual gifts; set appointments with prospects, conduct the meetings alone or as part of a team, and coordinate necessary follow-up.
  • Develop strategies for acquisition, retention, and upgrade of assigned principal and major donors.
  • Ensure donor acknowledgement (including thank you letters and tax statements), reporting, recognition, and other stewardship activities related to assigned donors transpire smoothly.
  • Develop and execute individualized recognition plans for donors with a goal of capitalizing on existing recognition and stewardship opportunities; work collaboratively with the appropriate museum staff to ensure donors receive promised recognition and benefits.
  • Provide comprehensive and timely reports summarizing activity, project status, and work plan timelines.
  • Record all relevant donor data and interactions in Altru and use the system's analytical capabilities to support strong donor engagement and communication practices.
  • Attend key Museum events as necessary to steward donor relationships.
  • Respond to donor inquiries and maintain excellent donor relations.
  • Coordinate donor groups as assigned and serve as staff liaison.
  • Coordinate special tours, speaking engagements, and other engagement activities with colleagues as tools to cultivate donors on behalf of MHS.
  • Participate in fundraising meetings and events; complete other duties as assigned to achieve current departmental goals and objectives.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with donors and key constituents.
  • Promote and nurture productive working relationships with staff throughout MHS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Pursue this work with energy, drive, and a need to produce results, especially in the face of resistance or setbacks. Must be flexible, self-confident, assertive, and persuasive.
  • Required to have excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to produce concise reports and recommendations, make presentations to varied groups, and articulate and inspire commitment to a shared vision.
  • Must be a goal-oriented and self-motivated individual who can demonstrate accountability, initiative, creativity, and focus in a rapidly changing and intellectually stimulating environment. Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, resolve complex problems, exercise sound judgment, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with donors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Solid understanding of development principles, protocols, and best practices.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Altru (or comparable donor software).
  • Travel required fulfilling donor and constituent relationship building and fundraising goals.
  • Position requires working occasional nights and weekends.
  • Possess a current, valid driver's license.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, philanthropy, or related field; minimum of five years of demonstrable achievement in nonprofit fundraising with principal, planned, and major gifts.
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) or other relevant designation.
