Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks a a Collection Access Photographer. As part of the Missouri Historical Society's plans to make more of its collection accessible, this position will be responsible for photographing a wide variety of artifacts-works of art on paper, paintings, pottery, clothing and other textiles, weaponry, tools, medals, ethnographic materials, personal items, and much more. The Collection Access Photographer will photograph legacy objects in the collection, with a partial focus on Charles Lindbergh objects and LBGTQIA+ objects. This will contribute to making the artifacts intellectually accessible to staff through Mimsy XG collections management database and to the public via the online cross collections search.

Essential Functions:

  • Produces publication quality digital photography of 3-dimensional museum objects
  • Performs post-production editing on images in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Connects Photo Studio images in the museums digital asset management system; and connects these images with their related collections management record.
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in photography, or a related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience in museum photography or in a professional photography studio/lab, preferably in a nonprofit museum and/or public sector

Skills:

  • Ability to handle (sometimes fragile) museum collections; knowledge of professional standards when handling museum objects and artifacts
  • Professional expertise in digital photography, studio lighting, and staging museum objects; ability to produce artistically-crafted, aesthetically pleasing, and skillfully executed publication quality images
  • High level of expertise in Adobe Photoshop; experience with managing digital photographs in a digital asset management system; some experience with collections management systems
  • Ability to communicate well and clearly with staff across all MHS divisions, especially as related to project tracking and workflows
  • Comfort with self-directed activity and ability to meet deadlines
  • Some knowledge of copyright as it pertains to digital reproductions in a museum setting and online
  • Solid written and oral communication skills
