Community Tours Manager

Position Summary:

The Community Tours Manager position is designed to connect the audiences to the region's fascinating history through experiential community tours. Although bus and walking tours are traditional tourism mechanisms, this role encourages non-traditional delivery with storytelling, humor, and facilitated dialogue that challenge people to think critically about our past, present, and future. This role is also about sharing our fascinating history and celebrating the city as a unique place. Using place-based narratives derived from history and collaborative storytelling with communities, the tourism manager will strive to make the experience relevant, engaging, and encourage connectivity across St. Louis.

Essential Functions:

Programmatic Expectations

  • Create, organize, and manage a slate of regularly offered dynamic tours that connect participants to our region's past, present, and future. 
  • Embody shared authority by working with diverse communities, leaders, and organizations to share their history 
  • Lead tours in the community and recruit, train, and manage a base of part-time or contracted tour leaders
  • Ongoing audience development with MHS members, tourists, neighborhood associations and other organizations to provide community tours for newcomers and classes
  • Attend industry conferences for professional development and networking
  • Help develop a new national tourism model for history museums that intimately connects the MHS to every part of the community

Logistics

  • Responsible for growing revenue
  • Establish competitive fees, revenue plan, and payment systems 
  • Create registration systems with a focus on online registrations

Research and Collaboration

  • Perform primary source research to develop tour programs in terms of locations, theme, focus, and structure
  • Collaborate with MHS staff to strengthen important stories and themes
  • Raise awareness of MHS in the community
  • Serve on institutional planning for exhibits, group tours, and other strategic initiatives of MHS

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Museum Studies, Public History, Education, History, Urban Studies, Theatre, preferred.  Appropriate experience may substitute
  • 3-5 years' experience in the group tourism field or museum education
  • Flexible schedule allowing for weekend and evening tour programs

Skills:

  • Shows a rich passion for St. Louis and a deep knowledge of its history, regionalisms, achievements, and challenges
  • Effective and proficient internal and external communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proof of creative and engaging storytelling; connecting audiences to the rich history of the region
  • Demonstrate best practices in working with marginalized communities to equitably share their history
  • Creative and grassroots marketing to affectively reach target audiences
  • Strong organizational skills with a good attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and be part of a dynamic team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook & Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Outlook) required
  • Nimble and flexible with change; and focus on advancing the Missouri Historical Society into the next decade
