Cultural Heritage Data Analyst

Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks a Cultural Heritage Data Analyst for the Data Lab, a team dedicated to increasing access to MHS's public domain data. This role will ensure the accuracy, stability, speed, and permanence of the lab's efforts through testing, reporting, and analysis. The team is small and requires a generalist programmer willing to learn whatever technology, paradigm, or standard is needed for any given project. This position is appropriate for an entry-level coder. On-the-job training and opportunities for outside learning will be provided. 

Essential Functions:

  • Learn and advocate for digital preservation best practices
  • Write and maintain tests to ensure targeted standards are consistently met
  • Create reporting mechanisms and dashboard views
  • Verify that discovered bugs are resolved
  • Work with stakeholders to identify, prioritize, define requirements for and test applications that support ongoing initiatives, exhibitions, and special projects
  • Monitor data aggregation, transformation, and curation which requires the learning of cultural heritage standards, schemas, and vocabularies on the job
  • Work closely with the other members of the lab team to plan for upcoming projects and implement various delivery methods
  • Ensure that the lab documentation matches current projects and goals
  • Review code and assist co-workers as needed
  • Investigate and learn new technologies

 Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
  • The ability to read academic papers and schema definitions should the need arise
  • Working knowledge of Python or R
  • Working knowledge of the Linux command line

Skills:

  • Familiarity with the digital humanities, libraries, or museums
  • Familiarity with relational and/or non-relational databases
  • Familiarity with data science tools and methodologies
  • Familiarity with data monitoring and reporting tools
  • Familiarity with logging and testing libraries and tools
  • Familiarity with data serializations such as JSON and XML
  • Superior communication skills to explain technical subjects to colleagues of mixed technical and non-technical backgrounds
  • Initiative and follow-through to see a project from an initial discussion all the way to deployment
  • Systems thinking to understand atomic tasks in relation to larger architectural challenges and department objectives
