Position Summary:
The Digital Communications Manager develops and executes digital communications and engagement strategy for the Missouri Historical Society and its entities. The Digital Communications Manager oversees messaging and brand standards for all online content – including all social media channels, enewsletters, MHS blog and mohistory.org, MHS's most used marketing tool. This position also supervises and directs the Institution's Digital Media Specialist and Communications Coordinator.
Essential Functions:
- Manages a high-performing team that handles all digital communications strategy for MHS, including website content, social media and digital engagement initiatives for the Missouri History Museum, Soldiers Memorial Military Museum, and the Library and Research Center. Digital content includes, but is not limited to:
- Social media channels for 3 separate locations (3 different Facebook and Instagram accounts, plus LinkedIn, Threads, X, TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube)
- Enewsletters (average 12unique enews per month)
- History Happens Here (MHS's blog)
- org (website that effectively communicates 3 locations)
- Develop digital content strategy for major institutional initiatives such as special exhibits, fundraising needs and more, in addition to communicating standing organizational priorities,
- Maintains and develop standards, processes and best practices for digital content creation and its distribution.
- Collaborates cross-departmentally to find content interesting for the public and use that as a point of entry to serve the institution's strategic needs.
- Manages a social media promotional budget (i.e. promoted/boosted posts and events).
- Handles the day-to-day content strategy for History Happens Here, MHS's active and relevant blog. Also serves as a writer and contributor. 2 blog posts per week.
- Serve as a brand journalist and storyteller, writing and producing engaging online content to advance the mission beyond the walls of the institution.
- Oversee and innovate with MHS's website at mohistory.org and MHS's email marketing program.
- Tracks/reports on digital analytics using Google Analytics and SproutSocial.
- Awareness of current news and trends and what makes great viral content and to engage the public with our mission in meaningful ways online.
- Develops engaging mission-driven graphics and videos for MHS's social media channels based off the institutional social media calendars and public engagement initiatives.
- Use social listening and engagement to build our brand's relationship with our audiences.
Skills:
- A creative storyteller.
- Strong writing and editing ability.
- Experience with email marketing software (WordPress knowledge a plus).
- Knowledge of HTML
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
- Knowledge of Chicago Style.
- Superior knowledge and fluency with various social media platforms.
- Experience with creating compelling messages for different target demographics and personas.
- Understanding of how data and analytics shape strategy.
- Strong interpersonal skills to motivate and drive collaboration with other functions.
- Ability to inspire content creators to achieve company and/or campaign goals.
- Ability to work both independently and with small committees and groups.
- Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-focused environment.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, English, or other related field
- At least 5 years of working experience in digital communications, social media or web content
- Proven writing and editing skills
