Position Summary:

The Director of Marketing and Communications leads integrated marketing and communications strategy to promote the mission of the Missouri Historical Society (MHS) and drive awareness of the Missouri History Museum, the Library & Research Center and Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. The Director of Marketing and Communications will utilize available resources to orchestrate innovative campaigns to promote brand awareness and effectively position the institution as a national leader in accordance with the organization's Vision for the Future. MHS's primary brand awareness strategy is to demonstrate to our audiences that MHS is the place that tells St. Louis stories. Thus, the Director of Marketing and Communications will broaden the reach of MHS's mission through a robust content marketing strategy.

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the oversight and planning of all external communications to attract diverse audiences for the institution's initiatives and priorities, including (but not limited to) exhibitions; educational programming; collections; special events; development & membership.

The Director oversees the following departments: Marketing, Digital Communications, and Public Information.


Essential Functions:

  • Builds multi-faceted marketing and communications plans by defining target audiences, determining strategy, crafting institutional key messages and ensuring consistency across all marketing and communication mediums
  • Directs and manages a high-performing Marketing and Communications team with a collaborative team approach in the implementation of all communications efforts; ensure that all communications mediums - media relations, advertising, promotions, graphics, digital communications, etc. - are working in concert with each other
  • Ensures multiple projects with often competing timelines are executed on time, on budget and effectively meet goals
  • As a member of the Institutional Leadership Team, brings the marketing and communications perspective to Leadership discussions and where appropriate, informs Marketing and Communications team of institutional directions
  • Effectively interfaces across institutional departments and encourages Marketing and Communication team members to work across departments in order to gather information necessary to develop and execute effective plans
  • Functions as the Crisis Communications Team lead, working in conjunction with President, Chair of Board, legal counsel and outside counsel as needed to respond to public relations issues and questions
  • Interfaces with public stakeholders to advocate on behalf of the Missouri Historical Society and its institutional initiatives
  • Serves as a lead resource to the Missouri Historical Society President/CEO and senior leaders for messaging, copy, and content in public response to statements, inquiries and FOIA requests
  • In concert with the office of the President, facilitates regular communications and reporting for key stakeholders and governing officials
  • Prepares regular reports on progress and activities concerning marketing and communications for the Leadership team
  • Prepares and manages annual department budget
  • Seeks to create new marketing and communications opportunities for MHS and its entities and initiatives using available resources
  • Act as a strategic communications partner with various departments in order to meet their communications needs
  • Oversees and ensures the cultivation of media contacts, promotional partnerships and other key relationships to promote the mission of the Missouri Historical Society and its entities
  • Creates and maintains of all communication materials including press materials, advertising, digital communications, print materials, etc. to ensure clear and consistent messaging.
  • Creates and maintains good working relationships with staff and affiliates
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by the President.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus seven years relevant experience in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Business, or related fields
  • Three plus years of supervisory experience in an effective team environment
  • Experience in non-profit communications, particularly in arts and like areas a plus

Skills:

  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills
  • Experience in budget presentation and management.
  • Knowledge of both AP and Chicago Styles
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of the evolving communications landscape and all communication channels and platforms
  • Excellent project and team management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to quality.
  • Ability to engender and sustain the trust and respect of the media, MHS donors and staff.
  • Skilled at developing relationships which enable them to become a trusted strategic partner
  • Self-motivated professional with proven analytical and problem-solving skills, strong decision-making skills
  • Proven track record of creating and executing effective communication plans to increase community engagement and brand awareness using traditional and digital media
  • Ability to create, implement and evaluate integrated marketing communications campaigns
  • Competent understanding of best practices in media relations, digital communications, content strategy, social media, graphics, and advertising
  • Knowledge of the Missouri Sunshine Law
