Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks a Director of Membership and Annual Giving. The Director will oversee the implementation of the annual fund and mid-level and upper-level membership goals through management and execution of annual fund development plan including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and recognition of membership.

Essential Functions:

Membership

  • Research trends in membership categories, benefits, premiums, programs, promotions and collateral. Develop recommendations for revised and refreshed membership program
  • Develop and implement strategies for retention, acquisition, and upgrades of mid-level and upper-level donors to meet or exceed annual income expectations
  • Responsible for creation of email and direct mail renewal campaigns and special appeals for member acquisition, including coordinating with a mail house, preparing and distributing appeal letters/packets, overseeing production of mailing lists, and preparing text for all gift acknowledgement letters
  • Manage membership budget, setting revenue and tracking expenses
  • Monitor and report on key metrics related to membership growth and generate reports to inform member engagement strategy
  • Create department collateral materials, including overseeing pricing, working with printer/mail house and other project management for print and electronic communications including upper-level giving brochures, mid- and upper-level donor eblasts, and upper-level renewal and welcome packets
  • Process mid- and upper-level donor acknowledgements (including thank you letters and tax statements)
  • Develop strategies and communications for upper-level membership renewals and acknowledgements
  • Manage overall strategic direction of Membership program

Mid-Level Donor Cultivation and Stewardship

  • Coordinate and conduct prospect research activities in order to develop strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding mid-level individual gifts
  • Manage assigned donor lists
  • Create and implement the mid-level member annual plan
  • Design and manage member and donor segments to support mid-level matriculation and upgrades
  • Utilize the capabilities of the donor information system (Altru) by both recording all relevant donor data and interactions and by using the system's analytical capabilities to support strong donor engagement and communication practices
  • Attend key Museum events as necessary to steward donor relationships
  • Respond to donor inquiries and maintain excellent donor relations
  • Coordinate donor groups as assigned and serve as staff liaison
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with donors and key constituents

Communications

  • Coordinate and maintain Engagement and Philanthropy communications calendars
  • Strategize content and work with graphic design team for member communication pieces-Website, Jeffersonian, Currents Magazine, Report to the Community, etc.

Event Management

  • Young Friends and Friends of MHS events

Annual Fund Development

  • Manage overall strategic plan for Annual Fund program
  • Plan and execute Annual Fund campaigns using print, electronic, and other fundraising media
  • Research trends in annual giving programs. Recommend new programs, design coordinating marketing and communications
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the Young Friends of the Missouri Historical Society
  • Promote and nurture productive working relationships with staff throughout the MHS
  • Undertake other Development activities as assigned, which may include proposal writing and personal interaction with donors

Supervision

  • Provide guidance and direction to fundraising and membership support staff
  • Manage office volunteers and interns

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of five years of experience in membership or development
  • 1 to 3 years supervisory experience preferred
  • CFRE preferred

Skills:

  • Outstanding communication (oral and written), multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills combined with vision, creativity, and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Extreme attention to detail and accuracy as well as ability to multi-task and manage multiple objectives
  • Raiser's Edge, Altru or other fundraising database experience
  • Must be willing to work some weekends and evenings
