Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks an Early Childhood and Family Programs Coordinator to develop and implement innovative education programs that engage families, youth groups, and early childhood audiences in the museum environment. This position splits time working in the History Clubhouse 30-40% of the work week and spending the remaining hours on program preparation and delivery.

Essential Functions:

  • History Clubhouse:
    • Leads a team of Early Childhood and Family Programs Museum Educators to implement weekly programming in the History Clubhouse (including Storytelling programs and special events)
    • Interacts with a variety of family, youth, and early childhood groups during their visits to the History Clubhouse
    • Interprets historical content when interacting with both children and their caregivers
    • Sanitizes and ensure cleanliness and organization
    • Works to ensure safety of visitors
    • Works to protect gallery space from misuse
    • Coordinates with internal teams regarding programs, groups, and schedules
    • Ensures opening and closing procedures are complete.
    • Interacts with Missouri Historical Society visitors in a friendly and professional manner, providing a welcoming presence
  • Program preparation and delivery:
    • Schedules weekly rotations for Early Childhood and Family Programs Staff and volunteers working in the History Clubhouse and facilitating Early Childhood and Family programs
    • Assists with staff training for working in the History Clubhouse and facilitating Early Childhood and Family programs
    • Develops programming that happens inside the History Clubhouse (including Storytelling programs)
    • Assists with the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of all Early Childhood and Family Programs (including but not limited to Parent & Me Programs, Family Nights, Scouts programs, Summer Family Fun Series, Early Childhood Group Visits and Outreach programs)
    • Requests and checks out library books for storytelling programs
    • Purchases and maintains necessary supplies and equipment
    • Attends regular update meetings with supervisor
    • Reports program attendance and progress regularly
    • Attends and actively participates in educational and professional training as scheduled
    • Must have weekend and evening availability. Will be required to work 2-6 weekend or evening shifts each month
    • Local travel required for outreach program delivery, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Early Childhood Development, Human Environmental Sciences, Family and Consumer Sciences, Museum Education, Museum Studies, Public History, or related field required OR comprehensive experience that is equivalent to a degree
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with children ages 10 and under and at least one year of experience working with children ages 2-5; experience working with all ability levels preferred
  • Program management experience preferred
  • Experience with staff scheduling and training preferred
  • Experience facilitating bilingual (English-Spanish) programs preferred
  • Demonstrated passion for St. Louis regional history and willingness to engage in complex issues facing the region through dialogue around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Must have weekend and evening availability - required to work 2-6 weekend or evening shifts each month
  • Local travel required for outreach program delivery, as assigned
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time during day-long programs
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, crawl, reach, and carry up to 20 pounds

Skills:

  • Knowledge of educational pedagogy, educational trends and the needs of early childhood educators, families, and youth groups. Background in museum interpretation is a plus
  • Familiarity with Reggio approach and/or constructivist approach to learning highly preferred
  • Must be exceptionally well organized and able to work in a fast-paced museum environment with multiple projects
  • Strong ability to make sound, on-the-spot decisions that reflect changing or unexpected needs of the museum's visitors
  • Ability to develop and implement programs from start to finish
  • Excellent listening and clear, concise verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Comfortable speaking publicly in large and small group settings
  • Strong ability to work as a member of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
