Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks an IMLS Cataloging and Digitization Archivist to work on cataloging and digitizing photographic negatives from the 1950s and 1960s made by the Sievers Studio as part of an Institute of Museum and Library Science (IMLS)- funded grant project. This position will create catalog records according to department guidelines and digitize 8x10 and 4x5 film negatives under the guidance of the Associate Archivist. This position will also monitor the condition of these negatives and prepare material for freezer storage as needed. In addition, the IMLS Cataloging and Digitization Archivist will process a series of loose prints, arranging the prints into topical folders.

This position is temporary, full-time for 2 years (December 1, 2021 to November 30, 2023).

Essential Functions:

  • Create descriptive catalog records for assigned images
  • Digitize film negatives using a digital camera
  • Monitor film deterioration and prepare material for freezer storage as needed
  • Arrange loose prints into topical folders
  • Supply images and blog essays for periodic social media postings
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree plus 5 years relevant experience, or Masters Degree/Masters Degree student strongly preferred
  • Prior experience working in an archival setting, and familiarity with archival processing and cataloging methods
  • Experience working with photographic material
  • Experience creating digital images

Skills:

  • Familiarity with Photoshop
  • Solid written and oral communication skills
