IMLS Sievers Studio Processing Archivist

Position Summary:

The Project Archivist will be responsible for processing 65 linear feet of a photographic studio collection made by the Sievers Photography Studio in the 1940s. The Project Archivist will create set-level index records and appropriate finding aids, physically re-house the material, and identify sets for digitization and item-level cataloging. The Project Archivist will also work to promote use of the collection through periodic contributions to MHS's blog History Happens Here, uploading digitized content to the MHS social media outlets, and preparing announcements for professional organizations. The Project Archivist may also assist in digitization, uploading of digital files into the digital asset management system, and other tasks as assigned.

Essential Functions:

• Process 65 linear feet of a large photographic studio collection
• Identify 3000 images for item-level cataloging and digitization
• Promote the project and collections through periodic blog posts and selection of digitized content for social media platforms
• Assist in digitization process and file separation
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Advanced degree in related discipline required (Library Science, Archival and/or Media, History, American Studies, Material Culture)
• Minimum 3-5 years experience working with photographic collections
• Experience working with large photographic studio collections
• Experience cataloging and digitizing negatives and photographs

Skills:

• Proficient knowledge of archival methodology
• Knowledge of proper identification, handling, and care of photographic negatives
• Knowledge of DACS and metadata standards
