K-12 Education Program Manager

Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society is seeking a dynamic and experienced museum professional to lead its K-12 Education Programs. The position leads a team that includes a full time K-12 Education Coordinator and several part time Museum Educators in providing accessible, participatory, interactive, inquiry based gallery + classroom field trip programs for tens of thousands of students each year. The position also develops strong relationships with local educators, including providing teacher professional development and a summer teacher institute. The position will play a key role in the expansion of the museum's outreach programs to local classrooms as well. Strong knowledge of museum and education best practices, pedagogy, and youth development is needed. Project management, flexibility, and the ability to nurture strong staff development and good team dynamics are also essential skills. Strong written and oral communication skills are required.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure all MHS K-12 Education programs are visitor centered and developmentally appropriate, provoke wonder and appreciation for our shared history, create personal connections to the past, include multiple perspectives and build empathy, are high quality and encourage return visits
  • Ensure all MHS K-12 Education learners individually and collaboratively use museum spaces, objects, and content to: 1. Compare and Contrast Past and Present, 2. Make connections between the people, places, and stories of history and their personal experiences, 3. Comprehend and evaluate multiple perspectives and past choices, 4. Express and support their own perspectives on history
  • Collaborate on K-12 program development with staff at the Library and Research Center and Soldiers Memorial with particular attention to these goals and outcomes
  • Lead and supervise development and revision of innovative, interdisciplinary, hands-on, accessible, guided and self-guided K-12 education programs for field trip groups from public and private schools for as many as 50,000 students annually to the Missouri History Museum
  • Lead and supervise development of outreach classroom programs for the St. Louis County Juvenile Detention Center and for the ACTivists and InterActors programs
  • Create and facilitate professional development opportunities for teachers
  • Supervise programs developed for Homeschool Audiences
  • In collaboration with the Audience Development and Evaluation Coordinator, develop evaluation instruments and conduct evaluations of K-12 education programs
  • Supervise all Missouri History Museum K-12 education staff, maintaining a strong training program and team cohesion and effectiveness
  • Participate in local and national educator conferences promoting the museum and its work
  • Attends meetings and presentations for the EVE Board Committee as needed

Qualifications:

  • BA degree in, education, history, museum studies or related field required.  MA degree in education, history or museum studies preferred  
  • 3-5 years experience leading development of innovative, interdisciplinary, interactive museum education programs and leading paid or volunteer educational staff required
  • Strong background in museum interpretive techniques and educational practice required. Some background in formal primary or secondary education preferred
  • Strong background in teacher professional development program coordination and delivery as well as knowledge of educational pedagogy, educational trends and teachers' needs
  • Experience developing and delivering outreach programs desired
  • Valid drivers license
  • Required to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to carry at least 20 lbs.  

Skills:

  • Excellent listening and clear, concise communication skills-both written and verbal
  • Strong ability to lead and work as a member of a team - good people skills
  • Ability to budget accurately and track spending
  • Experience working on national grants a plus
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet management, and email skills are required
  • Desktop publishing skills, social media familiarity, and e-newsletter experience are desired
