Position Summary:

The Manager for Media Archives is responsible for the care, cultivation, and preservation of the Moving Image and Sound Collection including film, analog video and audio recordings. Preservation of media includes but is not limited to monitoring of storage environments including storerooms dedicated to film and magnetic media as well as the Media freezer. The Media Manager is also responsible for all lab operations for the Moving Image and Sound Digitization lab.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Administration of the Missouri History Museum's Moving Image and Sound Collections.
  • Assist in acquiring grants and supervision of grant activities.
  • Consult with institution colleagues on digital video.
  • Participate in divisional and institutional projects and initiatives, including exhibits and programming.
  • Work with staff throughout the institution to assist in executing the policies and procedures of the institution and in furthering institutional initiatives as required.
  • Maintain appropriate professional memberships and remain professionally active and current in the field.
  • Supervising interns and volunteers; performance of daily operations and special projects in public service; media licensing and reference assistance to researchers and the public; collection development and acquisitions including donor relations; appraisal, accessioning & inventory of collections; arrangement and housing of collections; describing, cataloguing and researching media subjects, preservation and reformatting of media elements. Monitor and maintain proper storage environments for film, magnetic media and all other analogue audio recording formats.
  • Establish workflows for digitization for all moving image and sound formats; develop digitization projects based on need for remediation and digital preservation. Maintain quality control for digitization lab and continued development for best practices for digitization and migration to new formats as well as new storage mediums.


Skills:

  • The ability to demonstrate initiative, adaptability, patience and be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Perform and organize historical research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of best preservation practices for film and analogue media including environment and storage conditions.
  • Ability to work with and understand licensing and copyright agreements.
  • Assist in the planning, organization and execution of MHM film, video and audio collection preservation and digitization projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of video production process, as well as current best practices in analog video digitization.
  • Knowledge of digital video processes and formats, knowledge of, or interest in, obsolete, analog video formats.
  • Knowledge of aspect ratios, digital compression and digital file formats.
  • The ability to operate all types of broadcasting and production equipment is associated with reviewing, describing and digitizing video and audio recordings.
  • The physical ability to handle large, heavy and fragile materials; reach shelves up high and down low; and be able to traverse grate flooring, utilize stairs (mobile and stationary) and operate a pallet lifter.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in broadcasting, film/video production, history, or related field; MA in Library and Information Science or Certification from a recognized film preservation program preferred
  • Experience (3+ years) performing inspections on time-based media, preserving, restoring, housing, and digitizing in a film archive, audiovisual library, or recognized film processing/restoration laboratory or media center
  • Ability to operate all types of equipment associated with reviewing, inspecting, and preserving time-based media
  • Thorough knowledge of media digitization current best practices in time-based media preservation
  • Experience with databases and knowledge of time-based media cataloging standards
