Position Summary:

The Media Archives Inventory Specialist will perform an inventory of all MHS Moving Image and Sound holdings over an 18 month period. The specialist will use the collections management system, cross-referenced with original database tables, and original intake records to identify media at the item level and or reconcile media IDs and validate or establish media location, and provenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Completing primary inspection: identifying various media formats.
  • Reconciling catalogue records for Moving Images & Sound Collections in the Museum's Collections Management System, Mimsy.
  • Creating new catalogue records for Moving Images & Sound Collections in the Museum's Collections Management System, Mimsy.
  • Creating and attaching labels with MHS internal identifier to various media formats.
  • Housing of media into proper containers.

Qualifications:

  • BA or Certification from a recognized film preservation program.
  • MLIS is helpful but not required.
  • Experience performing media inspections, in a film archive, audiovisual library, or recognized film processing/restoration laboratory or media center.
  • Understanding of proper methods for handling fragile media elements.
  • Ability to operate all types of equipment associated with reviewing, inspecting, and preserving audio-visual materials.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in media preservation processes.

Skills:

  • Ability to plan, organize, and carry through on projects.
  • Experience in identifying various analog and digital media formats.
  • Ability to identify and remediate issues associated with analog videocassettes.
  • Experience in creating new catalogue records in the museum's Collections Management System, Mimsy.
  • Accurate recording of data, excellent verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to generate and track shipping logs.
  • Ability to prepare shipments of pallets of boxes.
  • Self-driven and be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to handle large, heavy, and fragile materials; reach shelves up high and down low; utilize stairs (mobile and stationary) and operate a pallet lifter.
