Military and Firearms Curator

Position Summary:

The Military and Firearms Curator is responsible for the interpretation and development of the military and firearms collection of the Missouri Historical Society and Soldiers Memorial Military Museum and is responsible for developing exhibits, presentations, tours, articles, and media pieces that share the collection and related history with the public at large.

 Essential Functions:

• Develop exhibits, tours, presentations, articles, and publications relative to the military and firearm history of the St. Louis area.
• Lead exhibit teams for in-house exhibits and serve as spokesperson for traveling exhibits with military themes.
• Research the society's current military and firearms collection, work to improve the collections catalog records, and develop an agenda for enhancing the collection.
• Assist with aspects of collection management and conservation.
• Foster relationships with donors as well as other cultural and community organizations and respond to internal and public inquiries about the collection.

 Qualifications:

• Master's degree in History, American Studies, Museum Studies or related field
• Minimum of 3 years curatorial experience, preferably working with military and firearms collections
• Broad knowledge of U.S. military history
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of museum and collection standards and best practices
• Familiarity and understanding of proper artifact handling
• Experience with museum collections databases
• Experience with exhibit development from concept to production, and knowledge of NPS exhibit conservation guidelines

• Team player able to work collaboratively with other departments throughout the Missouri Historical Society

• Ability to successfully manage volunteers and interns as needed
