Planned Giving Officer

Position Summary:

The Planned Giving Officer reports to the Managing Director of Development. This position is responsible for integrated fundraising initiatives to secure major and planned gifts. The Planned Giving Officer will develop, manage and implement strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors through individualized plans leading to major and transformational gifts.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop strategic plans to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective and current donors with attention to advancing the major and planned giving programs in achieving annual, campaign and legacy goals.
  • Refine processes to promote major and planned gifts; create donor communications plans to ensure effective stewardship.
  • Educate and promote planned giving opportunities including bequests, trusts, and other opportunities to donors and stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain a portfolio of planned giving prospects and personally solicit and secure deferred and current gifts from prospects and donors
  • Provide continuous stewardship of Chouteau Society and monitoring of those gifts to ensure donor satisfaction.
  • Create and manage the marketing of the planned giving program including social media and website in coordination with the communications department.
  • Letter and proposal writing.
  • Assist in the management of the prospect tracking function in Altru donor software.
  • Adhere to the professional, fundraising ethics of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management or philanthropy or related field; and minimum of 8 years of demonstrable achievement in nonprofit fundraising with major gifts and planned gifts
  • Demonstrated experience in working with planned gift vehicles and planned giving software/calculators
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of planned giving fundraising, estate planning or financial planning
  • Solid understanding of development principles, protocols and best practices, especially those related to planned giving
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and email applications, Altru or comparable donor software.
  • Travel required fulfilling donor and constituent relationship building and fundraising goals.
  • Working occasional nights and weekends required.
  • Current, valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) or Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
  • Masters in Philanthropic Studies or Nonprofit Management

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with donors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Must demonstrate ability to think independently and exercise sound judgment. 
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Must be a team player, a self-starter, and perform well with minimum supervision. 
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage short-term and long-term plans and goals.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to get the job done.
