Position Summary:

This position leads the production team at MHS supporting onsite MHS public programs and events, internal programs (such as meetings and trainings), and rentals, at all 3 MHS locations: Library and Research Center, Missouri History Museum, and Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. This includes direct streaming for onsite events and hybrid events with live stream when capacity allows and streaming is prioritized by Director of Education and Community Engagement or MHS leadership. Production support includes lighting, audio, video, and projection. The production manager also leads the team to create audio and video content when onsite event workflow allows and digital projects are prioritized.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Lead the production team at MHS supporting MHS programs and events, including internal programs (such as meetings and trainings) and rentals, at all 3 MHS locations: Library and Research Center, Missouri History Museum, and Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. This includes direct streaming for onsite events and hybrid events with live stream when capacity allows and streaming is prioritized by Director of Education and Community Engagement or MHS leadership.
  • Manage the hiring of the Production Team (including coordinator and technicians) with input from the department.
  • Oversee the training of the Production Team on all systems and procedures.
  • Oversee the department's operating budget and purchasing.
  • Work with the Director of Education and Community Engagement to create production processes, policy, and services.
  • Maintain and safeguard MHS assets and brand:
    • Ensure compliance of institutional policies. Guide staff as well as contractors or collaborators working in MHS spaces.
    • Assess programs in real time, ensuring that staff and contractors are implementing best practices and the product is high-quality. Attendance at some evening and weekend programming is required (on average 3-5 afterhours events per month).
    • Practice debriefing with Production team; review notes from team regarding live programs and events and make recommendations if processes should be tweaked.
    • Consult on institutional projects involving production support. Make recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment and oversee installation and training, as needed. Serve as the liaison between contractors and the institution for production-related upgrades and renovations.
    • Repair, replace, or upgrade existing technologies to complement and enhance the mission and direction of the institution.

Content and Large Event Production

  • Work with the production team to produce audio recordings for Here's History on KDHX, audio tours, audio descriptive tours, and additional accessibility audio recordings. This includes conceptualization, narration, recording, and editing.
  • Produce tour videos of exhibits as needed and as capacity allows.
  • Produce additional audio and video content that supports the programming of the Education and Community Engagement Department as needed and as capacity allows. Additional institutional recording projects can be considered as capacity allows; ECE Department needs are priority.
  • Actively manage large-scale, complex events along with the program lead:
    • Serve as the liaison between contractors and the institution for large-scale events that require additional technical support (such as outdoor concerts).
    • Assist with conceptualization of production at live events, requests for proposals, selection of contractors, negotiation of contracts, monitoring the work by contractors to ensure quality, and direct livestreams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in audio production, video production, theater studies, or related field preferred. Or 2-year or 4-year vocational training, or relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in production management.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in digital media or content production.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of supervisory experience.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent project, time, and budget management skills (ability to meet deadlines and work within budget constraints).
  • Ability to assess needs and strategize in the moment.
  • Dedication to upholding brand standards.
  • Ability to work among a team effectively (including multiple internal and external stakeholders)
  • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours is required.
