Position Summary:

The Assistant Collections Manager will work under the supervision of the Soldiers Memorial Collections Manager to assist with the ongoing cataloging and rectification of the collections and with the installation and deinstallation of artifacts for exhibitions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Primary duty is to help rectify undocumented artifacts:

  • Work with the Collections Manager to match undocumented objects to accessions.
  • Assist the Collections Manager with due diligence documentation and clearing title to Found in Collection objects.

Catalog artifacts:

  • Per established standards and procedures, catalog new acquisitions and refine existing catalog records for the collections of Soldiers Memorial Military Museum.
  • Physically number and tag objects.
  • Work with the Collections Manager and Photographer to coordinate the photography of objects.
  • Create housings for cataloged objects.

Assist with the installation and deinstallation of objects for exhibition:

  • Move objects between Soldiers Memorial and MHS storage facilities.
  • Work with the Collections Manager to pack and unpack objects, prepare condition reports, and lead artifact installs and deinstalls in the exhibit galleries.
  • Supervise object handling by non-collections staff.
  • Additional collections-related tasks as assigned.

Skills

  • Experience handling museum artifacts and working in museum collections preferred
  • Knowledge of 20th and 21st century military history and material culture desired
  • Knowledge of and commitment to current museum best practices
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good time-management skills and ability to work independently
  • Consistent, methodical work approach
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and climb ladders
  • Ability to safely maneuver artifacts on carts or with pallet jacks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with Mimsy XG collection database desired

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in history or related field; certificate or Master's degree in Museum Studies desired.
