Position Summary:

The Soldiers Memorial Digital Media Developer and Visitor Engagement Coordinator fulfills two primary responsibilities:

  • Develop and successfully deliver digital media content with a focus on short videos that share historical content-oral history segments, artifact highlights, veteran resources, and histories of military sacrifice. This content supports the educational and community engagement mission of Soldiers Memorial (60%)
  • Directly engage with visitors while stationed at the entrance of Soldiers Memorial Military Museum-serve as a "Navigator" (40%)

Scheduled shifts are Monday through Sunday, 40 hours per week, and may vary weekly. Frequent weekend hours are required (2-4 days/month). Occasional evening hours may be required.

Essential Functions:


Digital Media

  • Work with the Soldiers Memorial Oral Historian to select/receive segments of existing oral histories. Identify a captivating, short segment from each video recording. Use that segment to produce a 1-3 minute video that incorporates intro/outro logos and other supporting graphic elements. Produce 12 videos each year (1 per month).
  • Work with the Military and Firearms Curator, Soldiers Memorial Collections Manager, and/or Collections Assistant to identify artifacts (either on display or in storage) for use in videos highlighting the artifact and its history. Produce 1-3 minute video that shares information about the artifact and may include interviews, intro/outro graphics, or other supporting audio/visual elements. Produce 12 videos each year (1 per month).
  • Work with the Soldiers Memorial Director to produce 1-3 minute videos that provide information on current resources for veterans or organizations supporting veterans. Videos may include interviews with members of 3rd party organizations (i.e. representatives of the Veterans Administration), intro/outro graphics, and other supporting audio/visual elements. Produce 12 videos each year (1 per month).
  • Work with Soldiers Memorial Volunteers and Soldiers Memorial Director to identify individuals memorialized in the Court of Honor to create 1-3 minute videos that share the history of an individual. In collaboration with Volunteers, research the history of those individuals, locate photographs and other supporting audio/visual elements to support the video. Produce 12 videos each year (1 per month).
  • Coordinate dissemination of videos with the MHS Marketing and Communications team.
  • Incorporate the experiences of all branches of service, ranks, and veterans of diverse genders, race, and abilities, into products.
  • Track engagement statistics with the produced videos and establish evaluation measures to determine their reach and success.

Navigator Responsibilities

  • While serving at the entrance to Soldiers Memorial, foster a welcoming and engaging environment. Interact with visitors at many points during their visit including as they enter and exit the museum and move throughout the exhibits
  • Assist visitors with wayfinding and information about our exhibits and programs. Address questions and concerns in a friendly and professional manner
  • Conduct sales from the gift shop using a "Square" point of sale system. Assist with monitoring store inventory and making recommendations for new products
  • Engage visitors in learning about our mission, what we do, and the benefits of membership
  • Follow best practices in accessibility. Be familiar with, and use, accessible features to ensure that visitors of all backgrounds and abilities can access our facility and exhibits.
  • Develop a welcoming environment that is inclusive of veterans who are experiencing post-war trauma, injuries, and other effects of war
  • Ensure that institutional information (e.g. printed calendars, promotional signs, brochures, etc.) displayed on the floor is current and a restock supply is readily available
  • Assist inter-departmental staff in facilitating our signature events by helping with wayfinding, traffic flow, program activities, communicating with other staff to ensure safety of visitors and proper use of facilities

General

  • Attend professional development opportunities offered within the Missouri Historical Society and seek other growth opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Audio or Video Production; or History, Public History, or Museum.
  • Interest or passion for working in museums, history, or military history

Skills:

  • Adobe Premiere (or alternate video production software)
  • Video and audio recording equipment
  • Lighting equipment for video recording
  • Post-production video editing
  • Desire to collaborate on small teams to produce meaningful, creative products
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines
  • Creative, adaptable, detail-oriented, and well-organized
  • Experience networking and collaborating with organizations/individuals
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft SharePoint, Adobe Suite, ALTRU (ticketing and scheduling) and ADP (time recording)
