Soldiers Memorial Military Museum Education and Visitor Experience Interpreter

Position Summary:

The Soldiers Memorial Military Museum Education and Visitor Experience Interpreter primary responsibility is to facilitate engaging and participatory programs for school groups and summer camp groups. Interpreters will also engage in museum theater. These programs focus on the contributions St. Louisans made to the United States Military both at home and abroad. Programs will make students feel safe and welcome, help students develop museum literacy skill, and engage students with diverse stories.

Essential Functions:

  • 80% of the time preparing for and actively facilitating interpretation with a variety of visitors
    • K-12 Programs
    • Assisting with developing and executing museum theater performances
    • Outreach Interpretation to bring historical interpretation to the classroom and into the community
    • Gallery Interpretation
    • Tours for special events
    • Developing and implementing programing for large public programs
  • 10% of time spent participating in professional development
    • Participating in bi-weekly training sessions
    • Developing new tour and program material with the supervision of Education Lead
  • Implementing programs and events both at the SMMM and in the community. Less than 10% of time may be spent doing a variety of other duties as assigned including but not limited to:
    • Promoting and selling memberships
    • Selling merchandise
    • Welcoming guests, wayfinding, answering questions, and assisting with accessibility
    • Assisting with administering program and guest experience evaluations
    • Developing activities and workshops for homeschool days and scout programs
    • Organizing materials for programs and events
    • Audio visual preparation for indoor programs, and coordinating with MHS audio visual department for special events
    • Answering phone

 Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED is required
  • At least 2 years' experience working with youth is required
  • An engaging and welcoming presence
  • College degree as plus

  • Demonstrated ability to inclusively work with diverse audiences and accessibility needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team required
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills
  • Familiarity with US military history
  • Ability and willingness to engage in museum theater
  • Experiences working in a fast-paced, environment in which schedules and details are often changing
  • Ability to handle high stress situations and address problems with professionalism and empathy
  • Proficiency in email communication
  • Multi-lingual capabilities are a plus
