Position Summary:

The Visitor Experience Coordinator (VEC) oversees the day-to-day visitor services operations. This position fosters a welcoming and engaging environment so that guests of all backgrounds and abilities can make personal connections to Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. The position coordinates and leads the museum's interpretive and visitor services volunteers (e.g. tour guides, front desk reception, and gallery guides). The Visitor Experience Coordinator also works in collaboration across departments to ensure the museum is ready to receive visitors daily.

Scheduled shifts cover the open hours of the museum: Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00am-5:00pm. 40 hours per week. This schedule varies only in rare circumstances or special events. Occasional, but rare, evening hours are required.

Essential Functions:

  • Create a welcome, friendly, and professional museum environment
  • Ensure all intended features of the visitor experience are available for visitors as intended (e.g. brochures, letter writing station, store, scavenger hunt, etc.)
  • Answer visitor inquiries and address concerns
  • Serve as the point-person for Missouri Historical Society Reservations Department for adult tour groups
  • Deliver adult group tours when volunteer tour guides are not available
  • Serve as an advocate and representative for the museum in the community by promoting its resources, programs, and services
  • Track and submit all daily visitation numbers
  • Support Soldiers Memorial Education Coordinator with fulfillment of youth group tours and educational offerings (as needed)
  • Assist inter-departmental staff in facilitating our signature events
  • Advocate for visitors with diverse abilities and needs
  • Train volunteers for front desk reception, tour guides, and gallery guides
  • Along with Managing Director, plan annual spring and fall field trips for Volunteers
  • Establish and maintain linkage between Soldiers Memorial Military Museum and the Missouri History Museum and the Library and Research Center-especially with Visitor Experience staff working at those locations.
  • On days when museum is open, conduct a daily site walkthrough to ensure safety within the museum and grounds by reporting facilities needs or safety concerns to the appropriate department.
  • Collaborate with relevant departments on the implementation of emergency preparedness plans.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Hospitality Management, or related field
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a visitor services or related role
  • Proficient in or ability to learn relevant software, including (but not limited to) MS Office Suite, Square, and Altru

Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge about or interest in military and St. Louis history
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a team environment
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement and enforce policies and procedures effectively
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse staff and public in a manner that is respectful and kind, with an emphasis on a desire to assist from an informed perspective
  • A diplomatic character that seeks fairness and consistency when handling visitor and/or volunteer grievances
