Position Summary:
The Stewardship Director is a key leadership position on the philanthropy team focused on deepening donor and member engagement through meaningful recognition, communications, and events. This role leads the museum's stewardship strategy and oversees donor relations activities that enhance the overall philanthropic experience.
The Stewardship Director manages the Stewardship Coordinator and the Manager of Donor Relations and collaborates closely with the Director of Development and Senior Charitable Giving Advisor. This position reports to the Managing Director of Philanthropy and plays a pivotal role in cultivating a culture of gratitude, accountability, and engagement with all museum supporters.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Stewardship Leadership
- Design and implement a comprehensive stewardship strategy that enhances donor and member satisfaction, loyalty, and long-term engagement.
- Ensure consistent, personalized recognition for donors at all levels, including timely thank-you communications, reports, and impact storytelling.
- Partner with fundraising staff to ensure stewardship is seamlessly integrated into the donor lifecycle.
Event Management & Donor Experiences
- Supervise the planning and execution of donor events, exhibition previews, and cultivation activities that strengthen relationships and foster a sense of community.
- Oversee stewardship components of major campaigns and milestone events, including naming recognition, gift acknowledgments, and impact reporting.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure donor presence and experience is prioritized in museum programs and initiatives.
Donor Relations & Communications
- Collaborate with Communications and Graphic Design team to develop stewardship materials, including annual reports, donor newsletters, impact videos, and personalized donor updates.
- Collaborate with Director of Development to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness in donor acknowledgments.
- Oversee the implementation of recognition policies, donor signage, and honor rolls in coordination with the development and Communications teams.
Team Leadership & Cross-functional Collaboration
- Directly supervise the Stewardship Coordinator and Manager of Donor Relations, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Partner with the Director of Development and Senior Charitable Giving Advisor to ensure a seamless donor journey from cultivation through stewardship.
- Serve as a senior member of the philanthropy team and contribute to strategic planning, cross-departmental initiatives, and team-wide culture.
Skills
- Demonstrated success in planning and executing donor-centered communications and events.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Familiarity with fundraising databases (e.g., Altru, Raiser's Edge) and CRM best practices.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or CFRE a plus.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit development, stewardship, donor relations, or a related field.
