Position Summary:

Teens Make History (TMH) is a nationally acclaimed paid program for high school students. Since 2007, TMH has helped teens develop professional skills, build confidence, cultivate relationships with mentors and peers from diverse backgrounds, and explore the complexities of history.

TMH Apprenticeships are paid part-time jobs at the Missouri History Museum that teens can keep until they graduate high school. Interested teens are able to apply for an apprentice position after completing the TMH Academy.

*The Apprentice Exhibitor is a part time position that works 7 hours a week during the school year (September-May) and 14 hours a week during the summer (June-August). Extra hours may be offered on occasion.

Essential Functions:

Researches, develops, and writes exhibit-related projects in collaboration with fellow Teen Apprentice Exhibitors:

  • Uses primary and secondary source material for research
  • Brainstorms and identifies content for inclusion in projects
  • Schedules, conducts, and transcribes oral history interviews
  • Conducts visitor engagement surveys and evaluation
  • Plans and conducts interpretive programming for the public
  • Develops material for other projects as needed

Participates in evaluation for personal growth, program development and fundraising:

  • Conducts regular check-ins with supervisor
  • Fills out two written self-evaluations each year

Engages in professional development and team building sessions:

  • Attends monthly professional development workshops during the school year
  • Attends weekly field trips to museums and cultural institutions over the summer

Promotes the Teens Make History program and recruits prospective teens:

  • Speaks with program donors as needed
  • Informs peers, teachers, and others about Teens Make History programs

Assists with Teens Make History Academy:

  • Conducts interviews with applicants for the Teens Make History Academy
  • Serves as team mentor during Academy meetings
  • Participates in interviews for Teen Apprentices following the Academy

Assists with other programs and events as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in high school.
  • Must have successfully completed the Teens Make History

Skills:

  • Familiarity with the Missouri Historical Society and Teens Make History
  • Willingness to grow and accept feedback
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Willing to learn adaptability
  • Willing to exercise responsibility
  • Willing to learn and exercise time management
  • Enhance effective written and verbal communication skills through various projects
  • Ability to use email and word processing systems (Google Drive and Google Docs)
  • Ability to learn and use Chromebook
  • This position requires extensive periods of sitting, standing, and walking
  • Ability to participate in daily warm-ups and team-building activities, including bending, kneeling, stretching, and running (can be modified as necessary)
