Founded in 1866, the Missouri Historical Society operates three locations - the Missouri History Museum, Soldiers Memorial Military Museum, and the Library and Research Center. Together our locations serve as the confluence of historical perspectives and contemporary issues to inspire and engage audiences in the St. Louis region and beyond. We do that by telling local stories that focus on the history of this region and its people. This approach has led to some of the most consistently successful years in MHS's history.

Position Summary:

The Missouri Historical Society seeks an organized and enthusiastic Tours Assistant to support the planning, coordination, and delivery of the See STL Tours program. See STL's fun and creative tours mix engaging storytelling and a deep well of historical knowledge with an infectious enthusiasm for the exciting happening in the St. Louis region.

See STL Tours launched in 2020 and today include more than 40 different neighborhood-based walking and bus tours throughout St. Louis, led by over a dozen different tour guides. Tours are available throughout the year to both the public and private audiences. The Tours Program Assistant joins the See STL team at an important time, as the programs prepares to grow even more in the months and years ahead. The Tours Program Assistant will be critical to that growth, supporting the tour schedule, guide training needs, and delivering tours.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead See STL bus and walking tours
  • Support the coordination and execution of public and private guided neighborhood walking tours
  • As needed, serve as an on-site point of contact for scheduling tours, assisting guides, and providing tours
  • Assist the Public Historian/ See STL Tours Manager with scheduling, confirmations, and communications with clients and guides
  • Maintain accurate tour reservations, attendance records, and related data
  • Assist with implementing custom tours and public programs as needed
  • Perform St. Louis history research to support tours planning
  • Perform market research as directed by Public Historian/ See STL Tours Manager
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Degree in history, tourism, communications or related fields, or equivalent experience
  • Public speaking experience
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required

Skills:

  • Familiarity with general St. Louis history and architecture
  • A team player who values collaboration, professionalism, and creating exceptional guest experiences while representing the Missouri Historical Society
  • A detail-oriented, service-driven individual who understands the unique environment of a tours program
  • Ability to balance administrative work with hands-on tour implementation and support
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated to help grow the See STL Tours program
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in a clear, concise manner in person, on the phone, and in written correspondence
  • A solutions-oriented ability to respond quickly and calmly in high pressure settings
  • Demonstrated ability to inclusively work with diverse audiences, including making accessible accommodations for people with disabilities
  • Proficient computer skills: ability to understand and work independently with Microsoft products including Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Teams
