Position Summary:

Volunteers serve as a vital component to the work of the Missouri Historical Society. MHS is committed to creating an environment where volunteers thrive. The Missouri Historical Society seeks a Volunteer and Intern Services Manager to lead efforts to recruit, train, and show appreciation for volunteers and interns at the Missouri History Museum, Soldiers Memorial Military Museum, and the Library and Research Center. Working closely with staff across the institution, the Manager will ensure meaningful experiences for volunteers and interns.

Essential Functions:

Volunteer Program

  • Lead volunteer onsite interviews and new volunteer orientations onsite and virtually during the recruitment cycle
  • Plan professional development opportunities, short- and long-term objectives and goals for the volunteer program and strategize and execute recruitment events and programs
  • Execute quarterly Volunteer and Intern Meetings, quarterly external tours to area cultural sites, and annual Volunteer and Appreciation activities

Intern Services

  • Lead recruitment and placement for competitive internships as well as existing MOU's with partnering colleges and universities
  • Proofread and post intern position descriptions from MHS staff on AAIM Track two semesters (summer and fall) per year
  • Lead intern onboarding, evaluation, offboarding, intern webpage, and marketing effort through fliers and social media blasts

Adult and College Learning

  • Support the Community Tours Manager who will research and write Adult and College Learning guided tours
  • Train via the National Association of Interpreters Museum Interpreters, Tour Guides, and interns on tours and drop-in interpretive experiences at the Missouri History Museum for Adult and College learners
  • Support the museum interpreters who will write Gallery Talks, touch carts, and supplemental free, drop-in interpretive experiences at the Missouri History Museum

Managerial, Administrative and Reporting Duties

  • Administer the Volunteer and Intern database, adding users, tracking all required documentation, service hours, and reporting for internal and external benchmarks and funding
  • Attend regular staff meetings, training sessions, and conferences
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices and ethics for volunteer and internship programs
  • Supervise the Volunteer and Intern Coordinator, approve timecards, schedule training and delegate tasks
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Museum Studies, Public History, Education, History, Non-Profit Management, Human Resources, Human Services, or a related field. Appropriate experience may substitute.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of supervisory or managerial experience, preferably in a nonprofit museum and/or public sector.
  • Certification in National Association of Interpretation as a CIG, CIT, or CIH member
  • A minimum of 2 years working as an educator or as a tour guide (adult education experience preferred).
  • Flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend hours is required

Skills:

  • Ability to cultivate relationships with organizations and individuals to drive volunteer and intern engagement
  • Knowledge of best practices for volunteer and intern programs, museum education, and interpretation
  • Understanding of adult learning theory
  • Current or past personal experience serving as a volunteer or intern
  • Ability to mediate conflict with professionalism and empathy
  • Multi-lingual capabilities are a plus
  • Experience working with Volgistics and Blackbaud or similar database software preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality/ of sensitive information is required
