Youth and Family Programs Assistant

Position Summary:

The Youth and Family Programs Assistant facilitates innovative education programs that engage families and early childhood audiences in the museum environment including Storytelling, Parent & Me classes, Summer Family Fun Series, Make-and-Take Workshops, Girl Scout and Cub Scout programs, Early Childhood Group Programs, family nights, and special events. In addition to programs, this position also manages the History Clubhouse gallery space, welcoming families, interpreting historical content, and ensuring cleanliness and safety. The Youth and Family Programs Assistant also spends about 20% of their time assisting with program development and preparation.

Essential Functions:

            Working in the History Clubhouse:

  • Independently lead weekly programming that happens inside the History Clubhouse
  • Interact with a variety of family, youth and preschool groups during their visits to the History Clubhouse
  • Interpret historical content when interacting with visitors
  • Sanitize and ensure cleanliness in the History Clubhouse
  • Work to ensure safety of families
  • Open and close History Clubhouse
  • Serves as History Clubhouse Manager on Duty on Sundays, opening and closing the History Clubhouse and making any necessary on-the-spot decisions on behalf of Youth and Family Programs in the absence of other Youth and Family Programs staff

            Program preparation and delivery outside the History Clubhouse:

  • Facilitate and assist with the development of other Early Childhood and Family Programs that take place outside the History Clubhouse including but not limited to Scout Days, Parent and Me, Family Fun Days, and Summer Family Fun Series
  • Develop and prepare craft projects
  • Coordinate mailings and other promotional efforts for Youth and Family Programs and the History Clubhouse
  • Attend bi-weekly update meeting with supervisor
  • Attend training as scheduled

 Qualifications:

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Minimum 60 hours college credit with coursework in Education, Early Childhood Development, Human Environmental Sciences, Family and Consumer Sciences, History, Museum Education, Museum Studies, or related field required
  • Minimum 1-year experience working with children ages 10 and under and at least 6-months experience working with children ages 2-5
  • Minimum 1-year customer service or program management experience

 Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of educational pedagogy, educational trends and the needs of early childhood teachers, families and youth groups
  • Familiarity with Reggio approach and/or constructivist approach to learning preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Comfortable speaking publicly in large or small group settings
  • An interest in and passion for history
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Strong ability to make sound, on-the-spot decisions that reflect changing or unexpected needs of visitors
  • Trained or willing to be trained in First Aid, CPR, and AED
